Description
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a fast-moving infrastructure team building highly flexible, developer-first commerce systems. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-ownership environments, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and has deep experience working on products with significant architectural complexity. Responsibilities: Design, build, and maintain backend systems using Node.js and Postgres Architect and evolve complex distributed systems that support large-scale workflows, data models, and APIs Collaborate closely with product and developer experience teams to deliver features that unlock new capabilities for customers Work with early customers to understand use cases and guide them through architectural decisions Build reliable, performant services with strong observability, testing, and security practices Contribute to internal engineering standards, tooling, and documentation Identify bottlenecks, propose solutions, and drive improvements across the infrastructure Help shape foundational components of a managed services platform for hosted commerce infrastructure Must-Haves: 8 years of backend engineering experience with strong proficiency in Node.js or Postgres Based in East Coast Americas or Europe Experience working with complex products, such as: Developer tooling (e.g., Snyk, Sentry, Postman, Prisma) Orchestration or workflow tooling (e.g., Temporal, Alloy) Payments infrastructure (e.g., Stripe, Checkout, Adyen) Delivery or ride-sharing applications Hands-on experience building large distributed systems Experience scaling early-stage startups, ideally from Seed through Series A/B Strong individual contributor (IC) background; recent roles should be hands-on Familiarity with e-commerce, payments, logistics, or API-driven infrastructure is a plus Nice-to-Haves: Based in NYC IC (individual contributor) role in the last two positions Ex-CTO or founder experience Experience with distributed systems Commerce experience What You'll Bring: Strong technical judgment with the ability to simplify complex problems A product mindset and deep appreciation for developer experience High ownership, autonomy, and a bias for action Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills Why This Role Is Exciting: You'll be working on the core technology behind a new generation of commerce infrastructure.
